It is important to note that raising the levels of innovation and creativity among SMEs is challenging and actions need to come from a broad coalition of government agencies, universities and research institutions. Successful SME innovation can be greatly assisted by improved collaboration between government agencies, third level institutions and industry. The third level institutions and development agencies in Northern Ireland, the six southern Border Region of Ireland and Western Scotland are rich sources of support of support and advice in the development and diffusion of innovation, whether in products, services, organisations or processes.
